The Shanghai Ballet, formerly known as the The White-Haired Girl performing team, was established in 1979. As one of the most important Chinese ballets, The White-Haired Girl laid the foundation for the establishment of the Shanghai Ballet and cemented its leading position in Chinese ballet community. The White-Haired Girl was awarded the Classic Award in the 20^th Century Chinese Dance Classics Competition and has been staged for over 2,000 times.

Started with The White-Haired Girl 40 years ago, the Shanghai Ballet has presented many ballet productions, including Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet, The Sleeping Beauty, The Lady of the Camellias, Coppelia, La Sylphide, The Nutcracker, Giselle, Don Quixote and other classical ballets. Its repertoire also covers original ballets The White-Haired Girl, Bright Red Star, The Butterfly Lovers, A Sign of Love, The Last Mission of Marco Polo, Jane Eyre, Echoes of Eternity, Hamlet and Shanghai Grand Theatre’s version of The Nutcracker, as well as performances such as Balanchine and Beyond, The Ode of Joy-Gala Performance and The Charm of Ballet-Modern Ballet Classics. The Shanghai Ballet has developed an elegant “Shanghai artistic style” that draws on the strengths of others.

The glory of The White-Haired Girl has led to the success of ballet performers such as SHI Zhongqin, MAO Huifang and LING Guiming. The inheritance of The White-Haired Girl and other early productions of the company has raised XIN Lili, WANG Qifeng, YANG Xinhua and other ballet dancers to prominence. Today, the company’s varied repertoire has honed a number of exceptional ballet performers such as CHEN Zhenrong, JI Pingping, FAN Xiaofeng, WU Husheng and QI Bingxue. In the past four decades, the young performers of Shanghai Ballet have won 52 medals in international ballet competitions, breaking the status of Chinese ballet as an unknown in the international ballet world. China's first ballet medal, the first duo award and the first ballet "Olympic" gold medal were all won by the Shanghai Ballet.

Shanghai Ballet is active in cooperation and artistic exchange with artists and companies both at home and abroad. The company has toured not only in China but also throughout the world, giving performances in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, France, Spain, the Netherlands, Norway, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, North Korea, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Finland, Poland and South Korea, as well as regions like Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. It has showcased the unique charm of Chinese ballet to the whole world.
