On January 23^rd, 1995, the Shanghai People’s Art Theatre (founded in 1950) and the Shanghai Youth Drama Troupe (founded in 1957) were merged into the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre, the only state-owned drama theatre in Shanghai. In accordance with the relevant requirements of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee and the Ministry of Culture, and under the guidance of the Publicity Department of the CPC Shanghai Municipal Party Committee, the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center was restructured from a public institution into an enterprise. In November 2009, the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center Co., Ltd. (SDAC) was established.

The SDAC is a state-owned cultural enterprise specialising in programme planning, stage art creation, art production, stage art design and storage, theatre construction consulting, theatre management, publicity and marketing, art education, artist brokerage, etc. It has an average annual audience of 330,000. Covering an operational area of over 35,000 square metres, SDAC consists of the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center, the Shanghai International Dance Center Theater Management Co., Ltd., the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Culture Communication Co., Ltd., the Jasmine Theatre, and the Shanghai Grand Theatre.

Over the past 28 years, the SDAC has created nearly 360 stage productions, many of which have won national, provincial and municipal art awards, including the Best Works Award by the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, the National Project to the Distillation of the Stage Art, the Splendor Award, the Plum Performance Award, the CAO Yu Script Award, the China Golden Lion Award for Drama, and the Shanghai Magnolia Award, etc.
